You may have seen a “Jib” at a construction site as a projecting arm of a crane. In video production a jib is a big metal tripod type stand with a long arm that holds a camera at the end, and Montgomery Community Media is the proud owner of a brand new Jib.
You may have seen a jib at big events like the Olympics, the Super Bowl or at a concert. The jib camera operator stands in the back of the jib and is able to operate the jib to make a variety of creative camera moves that can enhance the look of most any production.
Signature jib camera moves include long sweeping pans that can go from a high position to a low one or vice versa, smoothly following quick moving action like dancing or running, and a long wide panoramic shot that smoothly moves closer towards the main focal point.
MCM’s jib was made by Stanton Video and they decided to name it the “Jimmy Jib” which certainly has pleased our longtime studio supervisor Jimmy Albert; just don’t let him tell you that it was named after him.
Training and certification for use of the jib is now being developed. Please contact the Training and Volunteer Services Department for more information.
Studio or field has always been the two choices for production at Montgomery Community Media, but now we are pleased to announce a third choice - the Mobile Production Vehicle (MPV), our new production studio on wheels.
Montgomery County Government, in collaboration with the PEG (Public, Education & Government) Network has purchased a custom made $600,000 MPV that will be shared among the nine members of PEG including County Cable Montgomery, Montgomery College Television, Takoma Park City TV, University of Maryland, The Rockville Channel, Montgomery County Public Schools Instructional TV, Montgomery Municipal Cable, and Montgomery Community Media.
The MPV was manufactured by Wolf Coach and the 17 foot vehicle features complete production capability that includes:
- Synergy One switcher w/still store
- four cameras, with an option for a fifth
- DVC Pro recording and playback
- Editing via deck to deck or controller
- Slo-mo digital based recorder and playback
- Two channel IFB
- Producer desk and much more
After final engineering work is completed, the MPV will be available and Montgomery Community Media will introduce a new round of MPV workshops designed to train volunteers on its use.
On Monday May 14th, the Client Service’s Department hosted a Creative Connections Meeting at the Charles W. Gilchrist Center in Wheaton to discuss a new production tool scheduled to be rolled out this summer or early fall: the VT4. The VT4 is a mobile production tool that encompasses everything found in a television control room or in a mobile production truck. In its short, stout, and heavy frame is a video production switcher, character generator, playback system and audio mixer.
The VT4 is designed to work with studio cameras or field cameras configured like studio cameras. Depending on the complexity of the setup, it can be completed in as little as an
hour, but most productions would require more time. This tool will allow productions the quick turn-around of a live-to-tape production with the portability of a field shoot.
Montgomery Community Media is still designing courses and procedures for using the VT4, but will most likely be initially available in an off site “studio” capacity at the Gilchrist Center.
